What I am doing now

February 18, 2014 by Michael ODonnell (Register to contact)

On my 67th birthday (12/31/2011), I retired from the Federal Government after 37 1/2 years of service. I was a Supervisory Mathematical Statistician for the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition in College Park, Maryland. I headed the Statistical Applications Team, providing statistical support to research and regulatory scientists (chemists, biologists, toxicologists).

I now teach Statistics part-time at Howard Community College (HCC), Columbia, MD. I teach two sections back to back followed by assisting in the Math Lab. In Math Lab, I answer questions ranging from 5th grade level Developmental Math through Differential Equations, sometimes in rapid succession. I am at the college MWF mornings. The rest of the time belongs to my better half, Barbara Anne. I am learning to teach online and have taught a hybrid version of Statistics.

I am also a citizen volunteer on the Mathematics Advisory Committee of the Howard County School System. We are assisting in implementing the Common Core to Howard County. Once the Common Core takes hold throughout Maryland, HCC will ramp up its Statistics course because students will have had about half of hat we now teach at the college level.. I am looking forward to helping with that.

Finally, as I did in high school, I provided (and continue to provide) musical entertainment (guitar & voice) at FDA and HCC functions. I am also a music minister, assisting at 4:30 Saturday Mass at St, John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Columbia. I enjoy contemporary Catholic hymns as well as traditional folk music from the USA, Canada, Ireland, the UK and Australia.

Family: We have been married 45 1/2 years and have six children - Timothy (35), Maureen (32), Bridget (almost 31), Patrick (almost 30), and twins Brendan and Kenneth (28). (Notice: All 7-letter Irish names!) Only Maureen is married. In May 2012 she defended her PhD dissertation in Molecular Medicine at the University of Maryland at Baltimore two days before the wedding! Fortunately, all of the children are doing well, but they do ask for our help and, as we get older, we ask for theirs.
